Cure SMA's basic research program investigates the causes and biology of spinal muscular atrophy (SMA), revealing new, more effective ways of treating the disease. Proposals are evaluated by the Scientific Advisory Board using a scoring system based on scientific quality and relevance to the Cure SMA research mission. Over $15 million has been invested in 134 basic research grants over the past two decades.
